Top Democrat, Clinton Chief of Staff, Co-Chair of President Obama’s Budget Commission, Erskine Bowles Discusses Ryan Budget and Obama Budget:

(Lynnfield, MA) — Former Clinton Chief of Staff and Democratic Co-Chairman of President Obama’s Budget Commission spoke frankly about the “Ryan Budget” and the Obama Budget. He described the Ryan budget as “sensible,” “honest,” and “serious.” Entrenched incumbent John Tierney has, predictably, spent the last two days deriding the Ryan proposal in the harshest terms, all the while failing to champion the $4 trillion in tax hikes that he recently voted for in his support of the Congressional Black Caucus’s budget.

“In March, John Tierney voted for two of seven budgets presented in the House: the ‘Van Hollen Plan’ and the ‘Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Plan.’ Both raise taxes and spending significantly. Neither repeals ObamaCare, which is a massive hindrance on the economy,” said Tisei. “The Van Hollen Plan leaves us with a $24.5 TRILLION debt by FY2022 and doubles Medicare spending over ten years. These are not solutions. They are simply more of the same. If massive new spending was the solution, our economy would be robust. Unfortunately, John Tierney and his allies have proven – beyond any dispute – that massive government isn’t the solution to our economic problems.”

Erskine Bowles (on Paul Ryan and the “Ryan Budget”) on Sept. 8, 2011:

“I’ll tell you this guy is amazing. Uh… I always thought I was ok with arithmetic. This guy can run circles around me. He is honest, he is straightforward, he is sincere, and the budget he came forward with is just like Paul Ryan. It is a sensible, straightforward, honest, serious budget and it cut the budget deficit just like we did by four trillion dollars. The President came out with his own plan and the President as you remember came out with uh… a budget and I don’t think anybody took that budget very seriously. The Senate voted against it ninety seven to nothing. He, therefore, after a lot of pressure from folks like me, he came out with a new budget framework. In that new budget framework he cuts he cut the budget deficit by our four trillion dollars over twelve years and to be candid, this just four trillion dollar cut was very heavily back-loaded, so if you
look it over to cover your bases and then compare apples to apples, it really was about two and a half trillion dollar cut.”

“John Tierney disagrees with President Clinton on raising taxes who, in February, said it’s no time to raise taxes on anyone. He’s for all the 21 tax increases that come with Obamacare as well as other taxes that were part of the $4 trillion dollar tax increase that he voted for in the Congressional Black Caucus budget,” said Tisei. “Let John Tierney explain to the voters why he even stood to the left of Elizabeth Warren in opposing the repeal of the onerous Medical Device Tax, which hits employers in the 6th Congressional district very hard. John Tierney is setting off smoke bombs right and left, rather than talking about his own, abysmal record on taxes and spending. It’s time for John Tierney to set aside his poisonous rhetoric and explain why he thinks the voters should pay higher taxes and why he believes imposing the Medical Device Tax is good for the people who depend on those jobs today.”
