Tisei to Tierney: Repeal Job-Killing Medical Device Tax Now

23 May 2012 / 0 Comments / in Press Release/by teamtisei

TISEI TO TIERNEY: REPEAL JOB-KILLING MEDICAL DEVICE TAX NOW

(Lynnfield, MA) – Congressional candidate Richard Tisei today said that Congressman John Tierney’s continued support for Obamacare’s 2.3% Excise Tax on medical device manufacturers is unacceptable and is a clear example of how Tierney’s economic policies directly hurt the voters of the 6th Congressional district.  Tisei demanded to know why Tierney hasn’t joined Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Michael Capuano (MA-8) in supporting repeal of this job-killing tax on Massachusetts industry.

“John Tierney is even to the left of Elizabeth Warren on the 2.3% Excise Tax on medical device manufacturers.  I commend her for changing her view on this issue and supporting Sen. Scott Brown’s efforts to repeal this tax,” said Tisei.  “John Tierney should immediately join fellow Democrat Michael Capuano in co-sponsoring H.R. 436, which would repeal the job-killing Medical Device Excise Tax.  The voters have a right to know why he hasn’t and it’s inexcusable.  The voters can be assured that, if I am elected to Congress, I’ll do everything I can to repeal this job-killing tax in January 2013.”

Obamacare’s passage in 2010 included a 2.3% Excise Tax on all medical device manufacturers, to take effect in 2013.  Tierney vigorously supports Obamacare and has refused to support repeal of this onerous job-killer.  In Massachusetts, approximately 400 companies employing 25,000 people would be impacted, including many employers on the North Shore.  On April 17, 2012, Democratic Senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren announced a reversal of her own position on this issue, saying that “innovation is a vital part of who we are” and that the medical device industry in Massachusetts accounts for “13% of all state exports.”  Warren said that the Excise Tax would slow the pace of innovation and harm Massachusetts employers.

“John Tierney stands with his Congressional masters in Washington, rather than joining in this bi-partisan effort on behalf the people and workers of our district,” said Tisei.  “That he cannot even join Elizabeth Warren, Scott Brown, and Michael Capuano on repeal of the Excise Tax is one of the clearest illustrations of how out of touch he is – and why we need to change our Congressman.  Tierney’s silence on the Excise Tax is deafening, even though it so clearly harms job creators and their employees right here in this district.”

“John Tierney should go talk with the employees of the medical device industry in our district and see what they think of this destructive tax on Massachusetts jobs,” said Tisei.  “I’ve done this.  I recently met with the employees of ABIOMED in Danvers.  They make heart pumps, which save lives.  And this company provides good-paying, stable jobs for the people.   This Excise Tax is a clear job-killer.  To be helpful, I’m attaching a partial list of where those employees can be found below:”
