Bad year for incumbents?

Veteran lawmakers in the region without opposition this year must be breathing a sigh of relief given the results of this week’s Town Election in Swampscott.
Incumbent Selectman Matt Strauss and School Committeewoman Jackie Kinney, who chaired their respective boards, were swept out of office along with 16-year Board of Health veteran Nelson Kessler.
That may explain why Congressman John Tierney, D-Salem, is wasting no time going after his opponent, Richard Tisei of Wakefield. The Tierney campaign released an Internet ad this week attacking the Republican challenger on tax issues, claiming, “Richard Tisei is out of touch with middle-class families.”
Responded Tisei: “John Tierney is telling the voters more about himself in his ad than about me. For having been in Washington for 16 years and having to go negative in April, six months before the election, is pitiful and desperate.”
